Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves intrusive thoughts, images, doubts, or urges (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours (compulsions). Compulsions typically aim to reduce distress caused by obsessions. OCD manifests in various forms, disrupting daily life. The exact cause of OCD is unknown, but biological, psychological, and environmental factors are believed to contribute. Despite uncertainty about its origins, OCD is highly treatable. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the recommended first-line treatment for young people with OCD. This approach has been proven highly effective, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE, 2005). OCD's diverse manifestations can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, but effective treatments are available.
